A spectacle that takes place right on the doorstep of the Martinerhof and attracts numerous visitors from far and wide every year. The cows are driven down into the valley in early September, when the days get longer and colder, and there is not enough succulent grass for the cattle on the Loferer Alm.
Splendidly decorated and accompanied by numerous drivers, the cattle move from the Loferer Alm to St. Martin. There you will already be welcomed by the festival community and can relax and enjoy yourself after the strenuous walk, and reflect on another successful year of mountain farming.
Visitors can look over the shoulders of people who still practice traditional crafts, from slate cutters to the processing of sheep’ wool on the spinning wheel.
You will not only sample culinary delights in our hotel; delicacies from the Pinzgau region await you here too, and what could be better than a glass of cold milk direct from the mountain.
Why are the cows decorated with flowers?
This tradition can be traced back to the 18th century. According to the old tradition, the cattle were only adorned if the mountain farming had passed with no accidents befalling either humans or animals and there were no deaths in the farmer's family.
Every Thursday in Summer, weather permitting, a convivial village evening event (“Dorfabend”) takes place in St. Martin, when the musical accompaniment is provided by bands from the surrounding area. The village evening promises a sociable get-together in the village, right outside the hotel and a gathering of locals and guests. Our young visitors with also enjoy a programme of activities for small children with face make-up and a nearby playground. Food and drink are provided by volunteers from the volunteer fire department association of St. Martin.
Every week, generally on Sunday, a concert takes place in the village in the modern music pavilion of traditional music by the Trachtenmusikkapelle of Martin bei Lofer. A varied programme with traditional marches and songs from the surrounding area, with some modern pieces.
A market (“Marktleben”) is held every Tuesday in the nearby village of Lofer in summer months if the weather is fine, which is an event for visitors and locals alike. The local businesses offer their delicacies in the marketplace, from Thai specialities to excellent grilled meats, you will find everything your heart desires here. Children will also enjoy a bouncy castle and face painting, with music provided by different bands and also a performance of local folk dancing groups in the evening.
Whether it’s the Almabtriebsfest, village evening or a brass band concert, there’s always something happening on the doorstep of our hotel!
